Frequently asked questions

What does gallery wrapped mean?

Gallery wrapped is a term that describes the edges of a canvas painting. When talking about a gallery wrapped painting it means the edges of the canvas are painted as well and there are no visible staples on the side. This way you can hang a gallery wrapped painting without a frame, as opposed to a painting which is not gallery wrapped so staples could be visible on the edges. When using stretched canvas I only work with gallery wrapping.

What materials are used in your paintings?

Most of my paintings are either mixed media or mixed media oil paintings. It is listed on the individual product page. In mixed media paintings I use different materials like inks, markers, spraypaint and acrylic. Mixed media oil paintings, also called oil over mixed media, are done in the same technique but with an additional layer of oil paint over the mixed media piece.

Is oil paint better than acrylic or mixed media?

The short form is no. It behaves different and I like to add oils as a last layer to unify the colors, make them glow and give them more dimension. Whether you like oils or acrylics better is up to you.

Do I need to frame your paintings?

That depends on the material the painting is on. Stretched canvas does not have to be framed, works on canvas- or painting-board, loose canvas and paper have to be framed.

How to hang paintings on canvas?

All my paintings on canvas, deep or thin edge, come equipped with a stable hanging wire on the back. That means you can either put them on a nail in the wall or if you have a gallery hanging, which is available also for private homes inexpensively, you can hang the paintings on a hook hanging from your gallery hanging strap. These paintings do not need a frame to be hung, although you can absolutely frame them, e.g. in a floater frame if you want to. The wire on the back can be bent easily to adjust the leveling of your painting. The wire of my bigger paintings (starting from 70 x 70 cm) is bent two times to fit two nails or hooks as one will not be sufficient for it.

How to hang paintings on loose canvas or paper?

Paintings on loose canvas or paper have to be framed first to be hung. You can either add a hanging bar on the bottom and top edge or frame them in a standard frame with glass. When looking for a frame either use a frame that fits the size or one with matting. In this case a little bit of the edges might not be visible. For paper with deckled edges a frame with two glass sheets looks especially nice so the natural edges can be shown.

How do I hang paintings on canvas board or painting board?

Paintings on canvas board and paintings on painting board have to be framed in an empty frame, meaning a frame without glass. You can stick them in from the back and secure with tiny nails. Then some kind of hanging mechanism has to be screwed on. I like to screw hooks onto both sides of the frame and stretch a sturdy wire in between.
